ALROSA presentation at IJT-2005

On 26th January 2005 IJT 2005 – International Jewellery Tokyo opened its work in the BIG SIGHT International Exposition Centre. For the first time in its history the Russian diamond miner ALROSA is among the participants.

The opening ceremony was attended by a number of ministers from Europe and Asia, leading jewellery manufacturers and industry organizations, heads of diplomatic missions.

On the opening day ALROSA made its presentation that was attended by the Russian Ambassador to Japan Mr. Alexander Losyukov, president of the Japan Association for Trade with Russia Mr. Takagami, president of the IJT-organizer RID-EXHIBITION Mr. Ishizumi. They welcomed the participation of the Russian company in IJT-2005 and expressed hope that co-operation between ALROSA and the Japanese diamond business community would be expanding.

Addressing the audience at the Company’s presentation the Russian Ambassador to Japan Mr. A. Losyukov said: 'It is symbolic that ALROSA is taking part in this exhibition in the Land of the Rising Sun in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of diamond miningin Russia. It means that the company looks far ahead, and that trade ties of the Russian diamond manufacturers and diamond miners with Japanese companies are likely to expand well beyond machinery procurement into co-operation in diamond and jewellery business’.

Mr. Ishizumi, head of the IJT-2005 Organizer-company, stated willingness to promote in every possible way co-operation between ALROSA and Japan’s manufacturers. ?? said he was especially pleased that ALROSA was among the exhibitors, the number of which this year is 1350.

The presentation was made by vice-president Serguei Oulin. He told the audience about the Company’s history, major directions of its development, its diamond mining and manufacturing potential.

At the media conference that followed the Company was represented by vice-presidents Serguei Oulin, Youri Dudenkov and chief engineer Mikhail Ganchenko. The Japanese media’s primary question was what practical steps the Russian company was prepared to take in the Japanese market. The ALROSA representatives stressed the unique position and importance of the Japanese market for the international diamond business. They stressed that it would require time to study and understand the market mechanisms and price dynamics in order to define ALROSA strategy in this market.

Around 1000 people visited the ALROSA booth on the first day. The main attraction was large diamonds of up to 22 carats in weight. ALROSA also had meetings with Japanese jewellery manufacturers who expressed willingness to establish business contacts with the Russian party. Some of them will take part in the auction held by ALROSA jointly with the Tokyo Diamond Exchange on 31st January. Available for sale there will be 53 of the largest polished diamonds offered by ALROSA.
