RUSAL Bratsk receives international environmental certification ISO 14001

MOSCOW, 11 May, 2004 - RUSAL, one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, today announced that its Bratsk Aluminium Smelter (RUSAL Bratsk) received the ISO 14001 environmental management system certification.

Commenting on the certification, Valeri Matvienko, Director of Aluminium Division said: “RUSAL is successfully progressing on its programme of ISO certification of its plants, further demonstrating the Company’s ongoing commitment to environmentally friendly production. Bratsk is the seventh RUSAL plant to introduce the ISO 14001 environmental management system. We are planning to introduce the ISO 14001 standard at Novokuznetsk smelter by the end of the year 2004, resulting in ISO 14001 certification of all RUSAL’s  aluminium plants.”

RUSAL began introducing the ISO 14001 international certification standards in November 2000, soon after the group was created.  To date, RUSAL’s ROSTAR beverage can plant, Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter, Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter, RUSAL SAYANAL, Samara Metallurgical Plant, Dmitrov Metallurgical Plant all have ISO 14001 environmental certification. The remaining RUSAL plants are in the process of being ISO 14001 certified.

The certificate is an internationally recognized standard, confirming that the plant has all the measures in place to prevent harming the environment during production and for the gradual improvement in the surrounding ecological environment. Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of Norway, an independent registrar organization, carried out the assessments.
