Second rubber finishing line put in operation at Butyl Rubber Plant of “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” INC

17 January 2007, “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” INC solemnly put into operation a second rubber finishing line “Welding” at Butyl Rubber Plant within the framework of a program on expanding a total capacity for butyl and halobutyl rubber up to 120 Ktpa. A. Shigabutdinov - Chairman of the NKNK Board of Directors, General Director “TAIF” JSC, V. Busygin - General Director “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” INC, A. Metshin - Mayor of Nizhnekamsk region attended the ceremony.
“Welding” is a multipurpose line designed to produce and dry butyl and halobutyl rubber with a high degree of automation and mechanization of all processes. It was proved at “Exxon” (USA) and “Bayer” (Germany) companies.
The decision to erect “Welding 2” was taken by the NKNK Management in December 2004 after the halobutyl rubber, which the Company started to produce in April 2004, secured its position in the world market.
In January 2005, a Protocol was signed to purchase a second finishing line; in November, civil and erection works commenced at the site; and; 16 December 2006, pre-commissioning operations were completed and the line was commissioned.
With “Welding 2” put in operation, the halobutyl production volumes are promisingly expected to double at the Company.
A general contractor was a local specialized petrochemical overhaul and construction company, equipment and pipelines were erected by a local erection company, DCS and ESD systems were integrated by a local automatic installation company, combined extract and input ventilation – by a local sanitary engineering company, electrical mounting work – by a local electrical mounting company.
Halobutyl rubber is applied in tyre industry to manufacture tubless tyre liners for halobutyl-based rubber is of enhanced gas tightness, of higher rupture strength and resistant to repeated strain. Modified butyl rubber is applied to manufacture conveyer belts, exploited in hostile environment and at higher temperatures. Furthermore, it finds application for manufacturing medical-purpose items.
To date, NKNK is the first and a single producer of halobutyl rubber in Russia. The NKNK CIIR and BIIR product list corresponds to that of “Exxon” and “Bayer” companies.
This is a multipurpose production process: a flexible flowchart enables to adjust a product list depending on the market opportunities. The process fully complies with the up-to-date levels of engineering and technology, industrial and environmental safety.
95% of halobutyl rubber produced is exported. “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” INC was awarded with gold medals for the CIIR and BIIR quality at the International Exhibitions “Chemistry 2005” and “Tyres, Rubber and Mechanical Rubber Items” in 2005 and 2006.
