MMK’s environmental management system passes its audit

OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works ("MMK" or “the Company”) announces that the Magnitogorsk mill has successfully passed an audit complying with the requirements of the ISO 14001 International Standard.

The routine audit of the environmental management system, which has been in place at MMK since 2004, was carried out by TÜV NORD CERT (Germany). The audit programme was completed in full, with no non-compliance recorded. Based on its results, TÜV NORD CERT provided recommendations for improvement and concluded that the environmental management system reduces the negative impact on the environment of MMK operations. It also meets the requirements of the ISO 14001 International Standard.

Auditors from TÜV NORD CERT met with MMK’s senior management and discussed the outlook for implementing the mill’s environmental policy. Achievements were also made to decrease the mill’s impact on the environment.

In 2015, over 3.1 billion roubles* will be invested in the implementation of MMK’s environmental programme. It is expected that the measures will result in a reduction of atmospheric pollution by 13.6 thousand tonnes in 2015 (6% year-on-year), and water pollution by 2.5 thousand tonnes (3% year-on-year).

The audit was carried out in 16 of the mill’s structural departments, including the mining, coke and by-product shops, the departments of the Chief Millman and Electrical Supervisor, the arc-furnace plant and the locomotive department, as well as various functional structural departments.

Decrease in negative impact on the environment is a strategic goal of MMK. This is reflected in the environmental policy approved by the mill’s management, as well as its ISO 14001 certificate. The environmental programme for 2015 includes 52 events aimed at decreasing and avoiding atmospheric and water pollution, recultivation of land and the use of production waste. '45 of the events will take place in their entirety in 2015, with the remaining 7 carrying on into 2016.
