OJSC “Surgutneftegas” water-protective measures: 2003 results

Water protection zones constitute over 75% of the Company’s production activity area. This implies following specific production practices and taking adequate water-protective measures.

In the last three years the Company invested around RUR 1.5 bn and RUR 5.7 bn in the construction of water-conservation objects and in the industrial waste treatment and disposal correspondingly.

The Company’s Central Base Ecoanalytical and Technological Research Laboratory tests the condition of surface waters at 147 points (67 rivers and 5 lakes) across all the Company’s oil fields in operation. According to its data, the condition is satisfactory and the technological environmental impact is acceptable. As for new oil fields, the background condition is tested at 151 points (66 rivers and 26 lakes).

Taking water-protective measures, the Company’s first priority is to prevent wastewater, trade effluents and waste liquids from contaminating bodies of water. No less important is to reduce water consumption out of surface and subsurface water bodies.

In 2000, the Company ceased dumping waste products into bodies of water, and all types of waste water are treated and injected into geological horizons for formation-pressure maintenance reasons. Thank to the use of waste water for these reasons, last year the Company managed to save over 331 mn ?u m of source water. The current expenses for industrial waste treatment and utilization amount to RUR 2.749 bn.

Last year the Company continued the construction of water-conservation facilities: car-washing installations with a closed cycle, renovated sewage effluent pumping stations, sewerage facilities, three-phase separator based installations for initial discharge of produced water, with the latter used to inject produced water into geological horizons for formation-pressure maintenance reasons at production sites. That makes it possible to reduce leakages in the time of transportation. Capital investments in the construction of water-conservation facilities exceeded RUR 326 mn.
