MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

March 22, 2004

AO MOSENERGO reviewed water protection measures in 2003

The protection of the water basin in the Moscow region is a priority task for AO MOSENERGO. Last year, water consumption from surface sources were reduced by 91.6 m m3, and from water lines-by more than 0.5 m m3. The volume of water that is disposed by electric power stations was reduced by 104.7 m m3. In 2003, the content of oil in disposed water fell by 7%, chlorides by 16%, sulfates by 7%.

AO MOSENERGO uses water to generate steam for operating turbines and supplying heat to the population. The quality of water is controlled at special chemical plants that operate at all electric power stations of AO MOSENERGO.

To lower water consumption, improve the quality of disposed water and increase efficiency of water treatment facilities, AO MOSENERGO branches carried out special environmental protection measures. The most important direction is implementation of new technologies and upgrade of the equipment at CHPs. For example, at its 10 divisions AO MOSENERGO introduced a new technology for cleaning water contaminated with oil. At four power stations AO MOSENERGO upgraded units for neutralizing disposed water. At another four power stations the company is installing monitoring equipment that helps to check the quality of water released to the Moscow River.

In December 2003, AO MOSENERGO commissioned a sludge treatment unit (the first in the company) at CHP-27, which makes it possible to reduce water consumption. As a result of the upgrade, sludge can now be pressed and utilized, which reduces the negative environmental impact. AO MOSENERGO decided to introduce similar systems at other branches of AO MOSENERGO.

This year, AO MOSENERGO plans to improve the quality of water coming from CHP to municipal heating lines by installing new equipment and water disinfecting technologies. As a result, the quality of technical water will be close to that of hot water that is supplied to the population.
