Moscow, 10 March 2004. The first 6 MW turbine unit has started running in the no-load mode (3000 rpm) at Argunskaya CHPP. During the first 72 hours of the turbine operation, all technological parameters, including vibration characteristics, have been within the normal range. Pre-commissioning work is underway to connect the generator to the power grid.

Argunskaya CHPP is the only power generating facility operating in the Republic of Chechnya. The power plant resumed operation in 2002 when the first 50 t/h steam generating unit was put into service. In 2003, RAO "UES of Russia" allocated RUB487 million in investments for the reconstruction of the power plant, with a further RUB300 million to be invested in 2004.

Upon completion of the reconstruction, the installed capacity of Argunskaya CHP will be 18 MW (four 50 t/h steam generating units and three 6 MW turbine generators ). This will ensure electricity and heat supply to the production and social facilities of Argun's industrial area, including the sugar mill, house-construction plant, meat plant, and some other enterprises. Resumption of production activity in Argun will help create 3,000 additional jobs and provide employment to local people.
