According to the Technical Director, 57 environmental activities were implemented at the enterprise as per the title of construction. These include measures intended to reduce emissions into the atmosphere. Some of the major activities are: construction of exhaust system for the casthouses of Blast Furnaces #1 and 2, combined gas-cleaning facility including hot metal desulphurization in BOF shop, reconstruction of the reheating furnace #3 in Hot Strip Mill # 1. Last year JSC "Severstal" started implementation of the project for construction of the facility for processing blast furnace slag that will allow to considerably increase the volume of waste products processing and sale of derivative products to construction  industry.

According to Mr. ?.?.Stepanov, due to implementation of technical and organizational environmental activities in 2003 taking into account production increase in comparison with 2002 the following improvements were achieved: emissions into the atmosphere reduced by 5.3 thousand tons, dumping of wastewater reduced by 840 thousand m3 per year.
Furthermore, the total water recirculation has been increased up to 98.28 %. Wastes processing ratio in 2003 was 94.8 %, whereas in 2002 it was 93.7 %.

As before the enterprise continued gardening and land improvement on the territory of the plant and the city - planting trees and bushes, making flowerbeds and lawns. 231 thousand Roubles were spent for these purposes.

In 2003 certain works were completed allowing the company to receive all the necessary documents on nature management. Such works included approval of the draft of maximum permissible emissions and discharge, obtaining the license for water use, receiving the license for wastes handling.

Informative:  Average annual value of environmental fixed assets at JSC "Severstal" is 1.43 billion Roubles. 43,845 thousand Roubles were spent for major repairs to environmental objects. The current costs of environmental protection are 218.5 million Roubles.
