RAO UES Entities Successfully Working in Competitive Part of Russian Electricity Market

Moscow, 9 February 2004. The enterprises of RAO "UES of Russia" are successfully working in the competitive segment of the Russian electricity market which has been in operation over 100 days. Unlike the Federal Wholesale Electricity Market (FOREM), it is an absolutely new electricity trading system based on the principles of competition and free market pricing.

Today, there are 63 participants in the competitive segment of the wholesale market, including 53 subsidiaries and dependent companies of RAO "UES of Russia": 26 of them are buyers of electricity, 21 are sellers, and 6 energy companies of RAO UES Holding act as both sellers and buyers.

Currently, the free market segment accounts for about 4% of the total electricity consumption in the European part of Russia and Urals. Since the launch of the competitive electricity market on 1 November 2003 to 1 February 2004, 4,464.6 million kWh of electricity were sold on the free market. In January 2004, 2,615.7 million kWh was sold in the competitive segment of the market, whereas the daily volume of electricity trading over the period has grown more than tenfold since the launch of the trading and is currently in excess of 130 million kWh.

In January 2004, the average purchase price of electricity was RUB 393.59 per MWh, which is 20% lower than that of the FOREM. 75.2% of the electricity demand was satisfied in January 2004.
