Deputy CEO of RAO "UES of Russia" Andrey Rappoport meets Kyrgyzstan's Prime Minister Nikolay Tanayev

Moscow. 21 January 2004. Today , the Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of RAO "UES of Russia" Andrey Rappoport held a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan Nikolay Tanayev.

During the meeting, the parties addressed the issues and avenues for the development of cooperation in the electricity industry between RAO "UES of Russia" and Kyrgyzstan.

As a result of the meeting, the parties signed an Agreement on Partnership and Cooperation between the Kyrgyz company OAO "Electric Stations" and the RAO UES subsidiary, ZAO "Inter RAO UES". The Agreement provides for participation of the Russian and Kyrgyz companies in investment projects in the field of electricity, for instance, joint funding of the feasibility study for the project to construct Kambaratinskaya HPP-1 and HPP-2; joint development of a concept for the creation of an international hydroelectric Consortium to build hydroelectric facilities in Kyrgyzstan and sustainable use of hydroenergy resources of the basins of the Naryn and Syr-Darya Rivers.

The Agreement on Partnership and Cooperation also sets out the terms of the long-term contract to supply electricity to the Russian Federation from Kyrgyzstan signed in December 2003.

Under the contract between OAO "Electric Stations" and ZAO "Inter RAO UES", in September 2003 Kyrgyzstan started electricity supplies to the Russian Federation via the national electricity networks of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In September through December 2003, the electricity supplies totalled 714 million kWh. The cheap electricity imported from Kyrgyzstan has helped improve the cost balance of the Russian wholesale electricity market and increased the investment attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan's energy companies.
