RAO UES Restores Power Supply from Russia to Georgia via PTL 500 kV Kavkasioni

Moscow. 20 January 2004. RAO "UES of Russia" has restored the power supply from Russia to Georgia via 500 kV Kavkasioni transmission line. Georgia has suffered large scale outages caused by an accident at Ingurskaya HPP. Today, the electricity transfers total 220 MW, but specialists of RAO "UES of Russia" expect that today, the transfers could be increased to 400 MW.

The emergency stop at hydrogenerator unit No. 5 at Ingurskaya HPP earlier today has resulted in serious outages in electricity supply across Georgia. The failure of hydroturbine unit has caused a power surge in Georgia's energy system. The automatic safety system has switched off the Kavkasioni transmission line (Tsentralnaya substation – Inguri HPP) used to import electricity from Russia. The safety system has also stopped generating unit No. 9 at Tbilisskaya TPP owned by RAO "UES of Russia". As a result, power supply was discontinued to Tbilisi and most of Georgia's districts. The only source of power supply to Georgia were the power transfers from Armenia's energy system arranged by Telasi Co. and International Energy Corporation, both controlled by RAO "UES of Russia".

The prompt actions taken by RAO UES made it possible to restore power to the vital infrastructure of the Georgian capital. By now, power has been restored to the Tbilisi underground and the city's television tower.

* In Georgia, RAO "UES of Russia" controls the energy distribution company Telasi, which owns the low and medium voltage networks in Tbilisi, and OOO AES Mtkvari (generation units No. 9 and 10 of Tbilisi TPP).
