Meeting of Steering Committee for Gazprom projects in Republic of Tajikistan held

The Gazprom Headquarters hosted the second meeting of the Steering Committee responsible for monitoring the execution of the Agreement on the general principles of geological survey at oil and gas prospects in the Republic of Tajikistan signed by Gazprom and the Tajik Government on June 10, 2008. The meeting was chaired by Valery Golubev, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee.

Taking part in the meeting were Vasily Podyuk, Member of the Management Committee – Head of the Gas, Gas Condensate and Oil Production Department of Gazprom, Zarobiddin Fayzulloyev, Tajik Deputy Energy and Industry Minister, Azim Ibrohim, Head of the General Directorate for Geology under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The meeting summarized the preliminary operating highlights for 2009. It was pointed out that during the current year 3D seismic survey had been carried out at the Sarykamysh prospect for the first time ever in Tajikistan.

In 2010 3D seismic survey is projected for the Sargazon, Rengan and Zapadny Shaambary prospects. In addition, drilling of the first prospecting well in the Sarykamysh prospect will be launched in July-August, while the second well in the Sargazon prospect – in late 2010.

Background:

Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and Gazprom is regulated by the long-term (till 2028) Agreement on Strategic Cooperation in the gas industry of May 15, 2003 and the Memorandum of Intent on setting up a joint venture between Russia and Tajikistan of March 28, 2006.

Since July 2006 Gazprom has been engaged in securing the launch of geological exploration activities in Tajikistan. The said activities are considered by Gazprom as a preliminary project aimed at identifying commercially attractive hydrocarbon fields. Successful implementation of the project will permit to create a foundation (resource base) for the joint venture’s business in the mid-term perspective.

On June 10, 2008 Gazprom and the Government of Tajikistan signed the Agreement on the general principles of geological survey at oil and gas prospects in the Republic of Tajikistan (Rengan, Sargazon, Sarykamysh, Zapadny Shaambary). As of today, the actions stepped up within the Agreement are as follows:

- the Russian – Tajik Steering Committee has been formed;

- the feasibility study and stagewise geological survey program have been developed by Gazprom;

- proposals on top-priority areas, volumes and geological survey phases as well as the substantiation of expenses are to be agreed on.

Gazprom zarubezhneftegaz, Gazprom’s wholly-owned subsidiary, acts as the operator for the said projects in the Republic of Tajikistan.
