MOSENERGO started IR checks of heating lines in Moscow

The Mosenergo Service for Technical Surveillance started to carry out infra-red checks of Moscow heating lines. The appliance of this method will allow Mosenergo to save money on the maintenance campaign.

Infra-red checks are usually held twice a year – in early spring and late autumn, in the cold season and heating lines are used to supply heat. This method is based on surveying the facilities based on infra-red radiation. The special camera registers infra-red anomalies which indicate leaks of hot water that have not yet reached the surface. The checks are carried out with the use of special equipment that is sometimes installed on helicopters. The testing equipment also includes PCs and software to process photographic pictures made by the camera and compare the statistic data. This technology was developed by specialists from GNPP Aerogeophysics. It makes it possible to promptly find leaks and sections with damaged insulation.

The main advantage of the infra-red check is that can be used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods to detect defects at underground heating lines without excavation. Through this technology, power specialists can quickly prevent operational failures and ensure reliable and uninterrupted supply for consumers in winter time. This method is equally important for planning heating line maintenance. After a comparison with the Moscow street map results of the checks are passed to local heating line operators. As a result, specialists receive additional information about the condition of pipelines that is used to estimate the volume of maintenance works.

Presently, Mosenergo services around 2,500 km of heating lines. Around one-third of these lines have already reached the end of their operation lives. In 2004, Mosenergo replaced more than 85.5 km of worn-out heating lines. Now Mosenergo Heating Grids has started to set up a special database that will contain parameters for heating equipment condition. The use of full, reliable and operative information will help planning the maintenance and increase the cost efficiency by 30% through replacing pipes that need work-overs.
