«Rostelecom» branch, long-distance and international exchange (MMT) to set records

For the first time the Moscow telephone network, run by «Rostelecom» exceeded the point of 2 million domestic and international long-distance automatic 8-code serviced calls per day, made by   subscribers in Moscow in August 2002.

Thus as compared to the time of emergence of the long-distance automatic service, the number of subscribers of the said branch (MMT) rose by more than 20 thousand times.

The outset of the automation of the long-distance telephone communications is deemed 1959 when the first subscribers from Moscow called to Leningrad by way of direct dialing through area code.  In 1961 there were registered only 100 long-distance calls a day.

Owing to the commissioning of automatic telephone exchange (AMTC-2) an intensive automation of telephone communication with the cities of the USSR took place in early 70-ies of the last century. Therefore in 1975 the number of long-distance calls grew up to 50 thousand per day. This figure rose every year and by 1985 it equaled 200 thousand calls per day, in 1990 – 400 thousand calls and in 1999 the number totaled 1 million calls per day. And finally as of August 2002 the number exceeded 2 million calls per day.

According to deputy director of MMT Mr. V.V. Litvinov, such a rapid growth in domestic long-distance and international calls is primarily explained by the continuous streamlining and renewing of the branch technical facilities.  At present the «Rostelecom» branch in Moscow has at its disposal 12 advanced automatic toll exchanges AXE-10 produced by Ericsson, Sweden and EWSD produced by Siemens, Germany operated by almost 500 technicians.

Liberalization of the Russian telecommunications market and market reforms in general had a great say for the rapid growth of long-distance and international traffic in Moscow. The number of calls through «Rostelecom» network in Moscow has seen a 5-times growth over the last 10 years.
