Gazprom intending to implement pilot projects on secondary energy resources use

The Gazprom headquarters hosted today a meeting of the Company's Coordinating Committee for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency. The meeting was moderated by Alexander Ananenkov, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee and Head of the Coordinating Committee.

Taking part in the meeting were members of the Management Committee: Viktor Ilyushin, Head of the Department for Relations with the Russian Federation Authorities and Vsevolod Cherepanov, Head of the Gas, Gas Condensate and Oil Production Department as well as heads of specialized structural units of Gazprom and its subsidiaries.

The Coordinating Committee meeting was dedicated to heat and power generation from secondary energy resources (SER) of gas compressor units (GCU) at compressor stations (CS).

At the moment, Gazprom uses SER to produce heat without fuel combustion. To that effect, the bulk of compressor stations were equipped with waste heat exchangers. SER ensure the maximum effect when turbo-expanders and proper power generating units that use GCU waste heat are installed at the Unified Gas Supply System facilities.

Gazprom's specialized structural units were tasked by the Coordinating Committee to investigate possibilities for launching pilot projects on creation and implementation of highly efficient energy generating equipment based on SER in Gazprom subsidiaries.

Background

The secondary energy resources are fuel and energy resources produced as waste or waste products (discharge and emission) of the production process.

The Gazprom Coordinating Committee for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency was established in October 2007 in order to provide an integrated approach and coordinate the environmental activities of the Company's structural units and subsidiaries.

The major goals of the Committee are as follows:

comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of the Gazprom Group environmental activities;

introduction of an integrated environmental management system;

coordination of Gazprom's interaction with environmental authorities and public entities.

In 2010 the total economy of fuel and power resources by Gazprom subsidiaries reached some 2.7 million ton of oil equivalent including over 2.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 181.6 million kilowatt-hours of electric power.
