NLMK Group announces management changes of NLMK Europe Plate Division

NLMK Group, an international steelmaking company with operations in Russia, Europe and the USA, is pleased to announce the appointment of Cornelius Louwrens as the CEO of NLMK Belgium Holdings plate business. It includes two of NLMK Group’s European sites: NLMK Clabecq (Belgium) and NLMK Verona (Italy), and together with NLMK DanSteel (Denmark), comprises the NLMK Europe Plate Division.

Cornelius Louwrens will continue as member of the Management Board and Director of Operational Efficiency for NLMK International B.V., a holding company for NLMK’s international assets.

Igor Sarkits, who previously held the position of CEO of NLMK Europe Plate, has been assigned the function of Industrial Development Director in NLMK International B.V. He will also take the position of CEO of NLMK DanSteel.

Changes will also be made to the management structure of other international sites. At the end of January 2017, Giovanni Borinelli will take over from Marcello Calcagni as General Manager of NLMK Verona. Yarak Yarak, previously General Manager of NLMK Coating (France), has been appointed General Manager of NLMK Clabecq.

These new appointments will unlock the full potential of our production assets and consolidate their position in the market. I would also like to thank Marcello Calcagni for the fantastic job he has done as head of NLMK Verona: under his leadership in 2015 the company became Europe’s leading manufacturer of steel ingots.”

Cornelius Louwrens’ background

Mr. Cornelius Louwrens has over 20 years’ experience in senior positions in some of the world’s leading steel companies. He graduated with a B.Eng. (Mechanical Engineering) degree from the University of Pretoria (South Africa) in 1990. He holds degrees from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa (2000) and Kellogg School of Management – Northwestern University, USA (2007). Mr. Louwrens worked for Tata Steel, ArcelorMittal, Saldanha Steel. Director of Operational Efficiency at NLMK International B.V. since mid-2016.

Igor Sarkits’ background

Mr. Igor Sarkits has over 30 years’ experience in metals and mining. He graduated from Mariupol Metallurgical Institute (Priazovsky State Technical University since 1993) in 1983, and went on to work at Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol. Mr. Sarkits joined NLMK in 2003. He has been the head of NLMK DanSteel (Denmark) since the plant became part of NLMK Group. Mr. Sarkits was appointed CEO of NLMK Europe Plate in 2011.

Giovanni Borinelli’s background

A Management Engineer from Politecnico di Milano Giovanni has many years of experience in manufacturing in the Aluminium and Steel Industries. Prior to joining NLMK, he was working in The AFV Beltrame Group (Italy) and was recently CEO of Comital.

Yarak Yarak’s background

Mr. Yarak Yarak has been working for companies that are currently part of NLMK Group for about 15 years. Yarak holds a mechanical engineering degree from the Lebanese University (1992). Since 2000 he has held various positions in Duferco; he also held the position of Director for Logistics at NLMK Europe Strip. General Manager of NLMK Coating since 2012.

About NLMK Belgium Holdings

NLMK Belgium Holdings (NBH) is owned jointly by NLMK Group (51%) and SOGEPA, a Belgian state company (49%). It comprises European strip manufacturers NLMK La Louviere and NLMK Strasbourg, NLMK Manage service center, and plate manufacturers NLMK Clabecq (Belgium) and NLMK Verona (Italy).

NBH sales in 2015 grew by 10% yoy to 1.99 m t, supported among other factors by the recovery in demand in Europe (+1.3% yoy). Slab supplies from the Lipetsk site to NBH companies increased by 9% yoy to 2.09 m t in 2015.

NLMK Europe operates production facilities in Denmark, Belgium, France, and Italy, manufacturing a wide mix of HVA products for the automotive, energy and machine-building sectors.

NLMK Europe comprises two divisions:

  • NLMK Europe Strip: NLMK La Louviere (Belgium) and NLMK Strasbourg (France), and NLMK Manage service center (Belgium).
  • NLMK Europe Plate: NLMK DanSteel (Denmark), NLMK Clabecq (Belgium) and NLMK Verona (Italy). The division is one of Europe’s top three plate manufacturers.
