Moscow. 28 October 2004. The fire at the Yuzhno-Sakhalinskaya CHPP-1 of OAO "Sakhalinenergo" has been extinguished. Part of the roof over the power boiler (30x40 m) ignited at 13:30 Moscow time. By 15:15 hours Moscow time, the fire was extinguished by the fire brigades of the Ministry of Emergencies and the power plant staff.

There was no serious equipment damage or casualties as a result of the fire.

Because of the accident, the Yuzhno-Sakhalinskaya CHPP had to reduce the power supply to customers from 200 MW to 80 MW. As a result, there were power failures in some districts of the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The power plant is increasing its output, and the power will be restored completely in a few hours.

A special commission will be formed to find out into the causes and circumstances of the fire at Yuzhno-Sakhalinskaya CHPP-1.
