The total volume of emissions in Moscow and Moscow region decreased year-on year by 19%. AO Mosenergo divisions lowered emissions of nitrogen oxide by 14%, sulfur oxide by 18%, the ashes of solid fuel by 42%. The company cut fuel consumption (of coal and gas) at its electric power stations and implemented a number of environmental actions. In January–March 2002, the specific fuel consumption at AO Mosenergo’s electric power stations was lowered by 2.8 g/GWt·h in electricity generation and by 0.2 kg/GCal in heat supply.
It should be noted that the decrease in pollutant emissions and fuel consumption at AO Mosenergo coincided with the increase in the operational capacity of electric power stations. In the 1st quarter of 2002, the operational capacity equaled 13,841 MWt, which is 572 MWt higher than the agreed amount, and 34 MWt higher on the year-on-year basis.
Traditionally, AO Mosenergo has paid great attention to environment protection. The company has a system of so-called territorial ecological monitoring. To increase the effectiveness of environment protection at AO Mosenergo's grids, the company installed 117 monitoring devices to check the level of nitrogen oxide emissions. The company is continuing to install these devices.
From 1983, AO Mosenergo implemented a number of projects aimed at air and water protection under a special program of the Moscow government for 1993–2010. In this area AO Mosenergo cooperates with a number of western companies. In addition, the company set up a system of ongoing ecological education for managers and specialists from all divisions of the company. As a result of dedicated effort, during the last decade AO Mosenergo has achieved positive results in the area of environment protection.
In 2002, AO Mosenergo has been continuing its ecological program which provides for installing new environmental equipment, implementing stage-by-stage fuel burning, repairing equipment for storing, heating and supplying liquid fuel at some power stations aimed to prevent fuel oil leaks, as well as installing and repairing water-cleaning equipment (to clean water polluted with oil products) and repairing and adjusting «cavity» equipment for protecting fish.
