Uralkali

September 13, 2004

According to the results of 7 months of 2004, Uralkali increased by one-third the volume of export cargoes transported by railway compared to the same period of 2003

Uralkali is continuously stepping up the production and, accordingly, the volume of cargoes transported by railway keeps growing. Over 7 months of this year, 2,637 thousand tons of finished products were shipped for export by railway - an increase of 35% compared to the same period of 2003. During these 7 months the company transported a total of 5,282 thousand tons of cargoes - up 9% over the same period of the previous year.

Practically all products of Uralkali are transported by the company using its own rolling stock - one of the largest rolling stocks in Russia among the operator companies. It consists of over 3600 wagons, including 2500 mineral wagons. In the coming years the company will increase its rolling stock to cope with the ever-growing carriage volumes. The Bryansk Engineering Plant began to deliver to Uralkali "hoppers" - wagons of the new generation, which will make cargo carriage more economical and effective (one railway train consisting of "hoppers" carries 162 tons more fertilizers than a train consisting of conventional wagons). The first batch of such wagons has already been put into service. Uralkali will receive over two thousand hoppers before the end of 2007.

The company is one of the largest consignors of the Sverdlovskaya Railway and, in the recent years, it has established good partnership relations with this railway. This is demonstrated by the fact that Uralkali was declared "Best Consignor" of the Sverdlovskaya Railway in 2002 and its "Best Transport Partner" in 2003. Within the framework of the cooperation the railway delivers to Uralkali all information about the location and repairs of the wagons and the status of personal accounts on a real-time basis. In 2003, the partners carried out a joint project - unification of four stations into one station, which allowed shipment of Uralkali's cargoes to be greatly accelerated.

At the beginning of September 2004, Uralkali was visited by Shevket Shaidullin, Head of the Sverdlovskaya Railway, who discussed the possibilities of further cooperation with the management of the company. They talked about the project for the development of the railway junction Berezniki-Solikamsk: because consignors increase carriage volumes it is necessary to increase the capacity of the tracks and extend approach lines to receive trains consisting of 71 wagons (today the stations can receive trains consisting of 59 wagons). As a result of the development of the railway junction Uralkali plans to increase shipment of cargoes by 2 million tons a year.
