GES-1 completes the assembly of a new power turbine

GES-1 named after Smidovich is installing a new R-12 turbine. The turbine will be put into operation before the winter.

The installation is part of a large-scale GES-1 upgrade program that lasts until 2008. The installation costs including the auxiliary equipment reached 135 m rubles. AO MOSENERGO is financing the installation from its own cash flow.

R-12 turbine has been manufactured by Kaluga Turbine Plant (KTP). It is capable of producing 12 MWt of electricity and 30 Gcal of heat. The new power equipment replaced the first Russian-made heat turbine that has been in operation at GES-1 since 1933. As a result of the upgrade, the Company will be able to increase the reliability of the electricity and heat supply in winter time (before, GES-1’s capacity was barely sufficient to operate in peak load periods). Hence, from 2004, AO MOSENERGO has put into operation another reliable and stable source of power for its consumers.

GES-1 provides heat and power to the Central district of Moscow including such facilities as the Kremlin, State Duma, Old and Lubyanka Squares. The installed capacity of GES-1 is 72.7 MWt. The power station produces more than 395 m kWt·h of electricity and 2,080,000 Gcal of heat per year.

GES-1 is the oldest power station at AO MOSENERGO. It was put into operation on November 28, 1897. In 1899-1900, it generated electricity for the first Moscow tram lines. It was GES-1 that was a pioneer in the implementation of new technologies and equipment that increased the reliability and efficiency of power station operation and reduced negative environmental impact. On August 13, 2004, GES-1 was granted the status of a historical and cultural site.
