The Mi-38 performed its maiden flight

On the 22nd of December 2003, the Mi-38 new-generation helicopter performed its maiden flight from the Kazan Helicopters’ airfield. Mil test pilots V.N. Koutanin and A.M. Klimov made a 6-min flight in front of Kazan Helicopters Director General A.P. Lavrentiev, Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant Director General Yu.M. Andrianov and other top managers. On the following day the second flight was performed which Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister B.S. Aleshin, Russia’s Aviation and Space Agency Director General Yu.N. Koptev, Tatarstan Republic Prime Minister R.N. Minnikhanov and other high-rank officials could see. The Mi-38 is a unique program in Russia’s rotorcraft industry. Apart from Kazan Helicopters and Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, two foremost foreign companies, Eurocopter and Pratt & Whitney Canada, are participating in it. The former has developed the Mi-38 avionics package, the latter PW-127T/S engines. From the outset, the helicopter was designed in accordance with the international standards, US FAR-29 and European JAR-29. The helicopter embodies advanced technical solutions: rotor blades made of fiberglass, X-type tail rotor, triple reserved electric and hydraulic systems, and others. The Mi-38 can be used in a variety of roles. The passenger variant’s cabin accommodates 30 seats, a pantry, luggage compartment and toilet. Emergency exits for the helicopter quick disembarkation are provided. The Mi-38 safety while flying above water surface is ensured by an emergency floatation system. The transport variant will carry up to 6 tons for cargo inside the cabin and up to 8 tons underslung. The cabin access is provided via a left side swing-up door with a staircase fitted into it, wide right side sliding door and ramp in the rear part. The Mi-38 can also perform search and rescue, medical evacuation (up to 16 stretchers can be mounted inside the cabin) and a lot of other missions. The cutting-edge avionics package designed for a two-man crew is installed on the helicopter. The information is displayed on multifunctional color screens. Taking into account the development of light Aktai and Ansat rotorcraft, Kazan Helicopters will soon be able to offer a range of multi-role helicopters with takeoff weight from 1 to 18 tons to its customers meeting the needs of the most helicopter operators.
