Rostelecom, Russia’s national long-distance telecommunications operator, has completed setting up ring protection system for its DWDM network in European Russia.

A number of Rostelecom’s fiber-optic lines in the Southern, Central and Central-Chernozemny regions were modernized to expand their throughput capacity as well as to establish self-healing rings based on geographically diverse routes adding STM-64 DWDM equipment.

Before that the Company had similarly modernized its backbone lines in the North-West, Volga and Ural regions. As of now, creation of self-healing rings (SHR) is underway in the Siberian and Far East regions of Russia.

Rostelecom became one of first Russian operators to introduce DWDM technology for maintaining a strong competitive position. Using DWDM equipment for three years, the Company has ensured higher capacity of its backbone to carry increased traffic volumes.

Arrangement of overall ring protection for the Company’s DWDM network enables Rostelecom to enhance the network’s throughput capacity, reliability and efficiency as well as to offer customers advanced telecom services. In addition, it underpins the Company’s technical ability for transmission of growing volumes of domestic and international traffic, including Europe-Asia transit traffic.
