COMSTAR launches an optional content filtering service for STREAM subscribers

May 25, 2010, Moscow: COMSTAR – United TeleSystems (COMSTAR-UTS, LSE: CMST), the leading provider of integrated telecom solutions in Russia and the CIS, announces launch of the new service called Switched Profiles for STREAM Internet subscribers in Moscow . It represents an incoming traffic filtering system that enables blocking of certain ports and IP protocols to ensure a user-defined level of unwanted content protection.

Users may independently configure traffic filtering in their personal accounts at www.stream.ru subject to one of the available profiles: Standard, Extended or Maximum.

The Standard profile is the basic profile that is enabled by default and provides the lowest level of subscriber equipment (ADSL modem, computer) protection against harmful incoming Internet traffic by its selective filtering: prevention of spam activity, security in Windows systems. Users may use their personal accounts to set up other profiles as well: the Extended profile ensures enhanced filtering of incoming traffic, while the Maximum profile provides an increased level of subscriber equipment protection.

The cost of the Switched Profiles service is a part of the monthly subscription fee as per the subscriber’s selected price plan, i.e. the amount of the subscription fee has remained unchanged. No extra charges for the Switched Profiles service are envisaged.

“In the World Wide Web, users may find both useful information and negative content. We believe that responsibility of an Internet service provider before its subscribers has to lie in the provision of easy-to-use and efficient tools to protect users against harmful and unwanted content. COMSTAR has long ago been engaged in taking measures to improve safety of its Internet users. We have a special program called “Useful Internet. Safe Internet” comprising multiple projects, including co-operation with non-profit organizations to develop the Internet, promote rules to safely use the Web and provide special services. For example, recently all MGTS price plans related to Internet access have been supplemented with a free-of-charge service called Parental Control. Besides, we have updated STREAM.Antivirus program and now we are providing our subscribers with a free traffic filtering service. In our opinion, we become responsible, forever, for who we have connected!” Maxim Chernov, COMSTAR-UTS Marketing Director, says.

To enable service provision, the standard software based on the RADIUS authorization protocol is used. This software is installed in the COMSTAR-UTS data center.
