Novolipetsk wins All-Russian environmental competition

Novolipetsk has once again become one of Russia’s Top 100 – Ecology and Environmental Management. The title of honor was awarded to the Company for its environmental activity in 2010.  The awards ceremony took place in Saint-Petersburg at the 5th Annual All-Russian Conference on Environment  and Production, Prospects for the Development of Economic Mechanisms of Environmental Protection, which was organized with the support of the Council of the Federation Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the Education Committee of the State Duma.

The competition was judged by an independent community council based on recommendations from heads of constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Key criteria for the award included the sustainability of nominated Companies’ environmental management systems and the ongoing reduction of their environmental footprints.

In 2010 Novolipetsk reduced its atmospheric emissions by 1,4000 tonnes even though its steel output grew by 781,000 tonnes (up to 9,288,000 tonnes). River water consumption was decreased by 11.1 mln m3, and there was no waste water discharge into the Voronezh river. The amount of previously stockpiled waste was reduced by more than 500,000 tonnes. In 2010 the Company’s environmental investments amounted to RUR4,137 mln.

For reference:
Novolipetsk has already been ranked among Russia’s Top 100 – Ecology and Environmental Management in 2007. This year the Company also won the Russia’s Best Enterprises: Progress, Efficiency, Responsibility award for Most Environmentally Responsible Business. The contest was held by the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. Since the launch of its Technical Upgrade Program in 2000, NLMK has allocated over RUR17 billion to environmental protection programs. As a result, atmospheric impact has been cut by 22%. In 2005 the city of Lipetsk was excluded from the list of Russia’s cities with the highest air pollution drawn up based on Roshydromet monitoring. In 2009 the Company completely stopped the discharge of effluents. In 2010 the Company successfully passed the annual compliance audit conducted by certification authority TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH (Germany) for compliance with international standard ISO 14001-2004.
