A working meeting between Alexander Ananenkov, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom’s Management Committee and Jun Niimi, Minister of the Japanese Embassy in the Russian Federation was held today at Gazprom’s Headquarters.

The parties reviewed the prospect of establishing in Eastern Siberia and the Far East a united gas production, transmission and supply network, taking into account potential exports of Russian gas to Asia Pacific.

“Russian gas deliveries to Asia Pacific to be effected based on intergovernmental agreements from the United Gas Transmission System and via an integrated export channel will ensure secure and long-term gas supplies to Asian consumers in the same way Russian gas is being piped to Europe nowadays,” – stressed A. Ananenkov.

The meeting also addressed potential cooperation between Gazprom and Japanese businesses in implementing gas processing technologies and respective joint projects in the east of Russia.

Japan is the world’s fourth-largest power consumer and practically does not have its own energy resources. While the country’s explored gas reserves average 40 bcm, around 80 bcm/y are needed to meet domestic gas needs.

Gas share in Japan’s power consumption accounts for 13% and, according to international analysts’ estimates, will reach 16% by 2020.

Japan is the world’s leading nation in liquefied natural gas imports, which accounts for almost 100% of overall gas consumed domestically. In 2002, LNG imports totaled 54 million tons (75.6 bcm). Indonesia, Malaysia and a string of Near Eastern countries are major LNG suppliers to Japan.
