ALROSA

July 7, 2004

ALROSA holds an International seminar

On 6th July, 2004 in Moscow in the framework of the Co-operation Agreement signed between ALROSA Co. Ltd., the Diamond Chamber of Russia, the Russian Diamond Manufacturers’ Association on the one side, and the Antwerp Diamond High Council (HRD) on the other side a joint seminar was held by the signatories in Moscow. The topical subject of the discussion was ‘Development of Diamond Distribution and Sales Networks’.

Attending on the Russian side were the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gokhran, top managers of ALROSA, the Diamond Chamber, the Russian Diamond Manufacturers Association and Smolensk Kristall.

The HRD was represented by Mark Van Bockstael, Director, International Affairs & Trade, and Youri Steverlynck, Director, Marketing & PR.

The participants made presentations and had free exchanges on major development trends and specific characteristics of the current situation on the market for rough and polished diamonds, government regulation and characteristic features of the rough and polished markets in Russia and in Belgium.

In the course of the discussion the participants stressed the necessity of further consolidation of the Kimberly Process and consistent proliferation of its principles onto the diamond trade world-wide. The focus of attention was the issue of so-called synthetic stones and treated diamonds as opposed to natural diamonds. The speakers underlined the need for diamond producers to take an active stand in relation to such stones. They agreed that it was essential to draw a clear boundary between the market for natural diamonds and that for synthetic and treated diamonds.
