High potential of Russian-Polish cooperation in energy sector for further strides

Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee took part in the negotiations with Bronislaw Komorowski, President of the Republic of Poland in Warsaw today as part of the official visit to Poland by Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation.

During the negotiations the parties discussed a wide spectrum of issues surrounding cooperation in the energy sector. They highly appraised the Russian-Polish agreements reached in autumn 2010 on partnership in the gas industry.

In addition, the meeting participants noted that interaction between Russia and Poland in the energy sector had high potential to make further strides as the countries were ready to execute new investment projects in the natural gas market.

Moreover, as part of the visit to Poland Alexey Miller met with Michal Szubski, President of the PGNiG Management Board.

“We positively evaluate changes in the Russian-Polish relations in the gas industry. We have recently agreed on increasing natural gas supplies to Poland under the existing contract as well as come to mutual understanding of many aspects of bilateral partnership between Gazprom and PGNiG. Today our cooperation is based on the parity of interests. It's clear for us that we are capable of developing cooperation in an efficient way irrespective of whatever the circumstances may be,” said Alexey Miller.

Background:

Poland's annual natural gas consumption is about 13.7 billion cubic meters with around 30 per cent produced domestically.

In 2009 Gazprom supplied Poland with 9 billion cubic meters of Russian gas.

The contracts for Russian gas supply to Poland and for gas transit across Poland are effective until 2022 and 2019 respectively.

In October 2010 Gazprom and PGNiG signed a number of inter-corporate agreements related to increasing Russian natural gas supplies to Poland starting from 2010. In particular, an Addendum to the Russian gas supply contract was signed providing for an opportunity to increase gas exports to Poland up to 11 billion cubic meters a year in line with the Polish market demand.

PGNiG is Poland's largest petroleum company dealing with oil and gas field development, energy production, storage and transportation, oil and gas transmission network construction and expansion as well as natural gas exports and imports.
