From June 14 to 18, 2004, in Saint Petersburg, the Eighth Petersburg International Economic Forum is taking place. The Forum is held under patronage of the President, with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation and attended by heads of states, governments and parliaments, heads of the Russian Federation subjects as well as representatives of business elite, prominent scholars and public figures from the CIS countries and the rest of the world.
The motto of the Forum is «Efficient Economy — Worthy Life», so the special attention is paid to the economic growth and quality of life under conditions of globalization, development of economic relations of the European Union with Russia and other CIS countries, implementation of economic and social reforms, development of modern information technologies, attraction of investments, accession of new countries to the World Trade Organization and other topical issues.
During the Forum there was held the roundtable «Issues on the development of the information and communication branch of Russia and the CIS Countries». It took place in the A. S. Popov Central Museum of ?ommunication on June 16, with Rostelecom?s management taking part.
The participants — among others, heads of the biggest Russian telecommunications and IT-companies, official representatives of CIS countries — were addressed with welcoming speeches by the Minister of the Russian Federation for Information Technologies and Communications Leonid Reiman, the Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Dmitry Mezentsev and other high-ranking officials.
The round-table discussion focused on development and application of information and telecommunication technologies in Russia and the CIS countries, with special attention being paid to government control in the sector, introduction of telecom technologies, development of the Internet in the CIS countries as well as economic aspects of information technologies application.
