Central Telegraph selected PON technology to be primarily used in access networks

JSC Central Telegraph, one of the leading carriers in the Moscow region, announced its plans in the area of development of access networks in the city of Moscow and in the Moscow region. Passive Optical Network (PON) technology was selected as the main technology to be used in this field. In 2004 broadband multi-service access network based on PON technology built by the company will cover more than 95% of the territory where Central Telegraph provides its communication services.

Equipment by Teraware Communications (USA), a leading international manufacturer of equipment and solutions for multi-service broadband optical access networks, will be used for the setup of PON networks. This equipment will be delivered to Central Telegraph by Telecom Transport, one of the largest distributors of PON equipment in Russia .

"TeraPON equipment by Teraware Communications not just allows to bring a high-speed digital channel to a subscriber, it also lets to ensure the maintenance of required quality of service for data transfer and to set "transparent" channels for traditional telephony," said Vasily Stavritsky, Director of Network and Telecommunication System Development at JSC Central Telegraph. "These were the factors that became crucial when we selected this solution for the organization of the "last mile".

At present the company has already installed 5 central hubs TW-600 providing services to 30 subscriber terminals TW-300. These devices are used both for connection of corporate customers and for provision of telephone services at new residential districts with organization of house networks. In 2004 it is planned to increase the number of central hubs TW-600 in more than two times.

The use of the new technology will allow to provide customers with new types of services (high-speed Internet access, VLAN, etc.) with guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). Previously used SDH technology at present is only applied at places that are located outside of central hubs' zone of operation. Central Telegraph also replaces customer SDH equipment to PON equipment.

"PON technology is beyond any competition due to exceptional saving of fibers," said Evgueny Gaskevich, Managing Director of Telecom Transport. "Up to 32 subscriber nodes can be connected with one fiber, and each of them is designed for an ordinary department block or an office building. This saving, exceptional flexibility and almost full absence of maintenance are the advantages that will ensure wide use of PON technology in the nearest future. It is necessary to point out that a multi-service access platform based on the PON technology has all standard interfaces to backbone communication networks. This allows a carrier to easily perform modernization of backbone channels and to move to modern multi-gigabit packet technologies – Gigabit Ethernet. ATM, DWDM – just by the way of connection of existing PON access networks to new backbone channels. This is a big advantage of PON in comparison, for example, with PDH technology that was earlier used for the construction of optical last miles."

TeraPON equipment was thoroughly tested at Central Telegraph during more than six months. The tests proved all declared technical capabilities. Wide implementation of PON networks was started in summer 2003.

About PON technology

PON is at the moment one of the most perspective technologies of fiber-optic access networks. PON are implemented all over the world; only in Moscow more than 100 PON nodes are put into operation each month. The essential feature of PON (Passive Optical Network) technology is that a fully passive optical network with tree topology is constructed between the central node and remote subscriber nodes. Passive optical splitters (compact devices that do not require power or maintenance) are installed at intermediate nodes of the tree. PON technology opens absolutely new service opportunities to carriers. With one optic fiber it is possible to combine up to 32 subscriber nodes within the radius up to 20 km from the central node to a single optic segment of the tree topology.

All PON network subscribers are terminal, any breakage or loss of power for any subscriber node does not affect the operation of other nodes.

Direct and reverse channels are transferred at different wavelengths with the speed 155 Mbps or 622 Mbps to each direction. Capacity of the PON network is dynamically spread between the subscribers. Each subscriber node is designed for a block of flats or an office building and supports simultaneously interfaces Ethernet 10/100BaseT with capability to transfer versatile data traffic, up to 20 E1 channels and video channels. The central node ensures connection to SDH/ATM/GigE channels and supports up to 128 subscriber nodes (4 PON segments).
