RUSAL’s Engineering & Technology Center in collaboration with Hatch completes feasibility study for modernization projects at Krasnoyarsk and Sayanogorsk smelters

Moscow, 2 December 2003 – RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium companies, announced that its R&D subsidiary Engineering & Technology Center, along with engineering and construction company Hatch Group, completed the feasibility study for the modernization programmes at the group’s Krasnoyarsk and Sayanogorsk smelters.

The comprehensive modernization programmes at the two smelters include reduction technology upgrade, installation of additional pots, modernization of casthouse area at Sayanogorsk, anode plant development at Sayanogorsk, anode paste plant modernization at Krasnoyarsk, electrical area upgrades, and dry scrubbers’ installation at Krasnoyarsk.

According to Hatch estimates, investments into Krasnoyarsk and Sayanogorsk modernization will amount to $ 270 mln. and $62 mln. respectively.

As part of the modernization programme at Krasnoyarsk, 19 new dry-scrubbers will be installed, 76 new pots will be added, point feeders will be installed on all 21 Soderberg potrooms, 8 potlines will be converted to dry anode technology, and the carbon plant will be modernized. The projects will help raise Krasnoyarsk smelter’s production by 9% to 989 000 tons.

Sayanogorsk’s smelter modernization programme will also include potroom expansion (18 cells will be added), modernization of dry-scrubbers, upgrade of electrical area, and anode plant development. Some new equipment will be installed in the casthouse area. Total output will be raised by approx. 5.5% to around 480,000 tons.

"The Sayanogorsk modernization project is to be completed by 2006, closely followed by Kransoyarsk in 2007”, says Valery Matvienko, RUSAL’s production director.  “The programmes are aimed at raising the smelters' efficiency, to make the operations more environmentally friendly, and to raise the effectiveness of raw material and energy consumption. The projects will also raise the two smelters' total output by over 100,000 tons."
The Hatch Group, which incorporated both Kaiser Engineers and BHP Engineers, is a world-renowned engineering and construction organisation, which has provided the industry and government with management and technical services for over 80 years.  The Hatch Associate Group has performed work in 90 countries on five continents, on assignments ranging from small, short-term studies to multi-billion-dollar projects.
