Annual Global Telecommunications Meeting (GTM) organized by the world's leading satellite communications company Intelsat took place in Washington on May 17 — 21, 2004. There were about 2,500 representatives of more than 750 telecommunications companies from 160 countries taking part in this year conference, with Rostelecom being one of the sponsors — for the first time in its history.

Rostelecom's delegation, headed by Deputy General Director — Commercial Director Gioulnara Khasianova, held a number of meetings concerning cooperation between the Company and international operators.

More than 70 discussions resulted in:

• Resolving questions of additional traffic volume attraction, traffic transmission cost saving, optimization of expenses on international telecom channels, introduction of new services;
  
• Reaching new agreements on ensuring access from abroad to a range of telecom services provided via a single prepaid card of Rostelecom — thus the Card is now available in 44 countries.

According to Gioulnara Khasianova, «active participation of Rostelecom in GTM 2004 is part and parcel of the Company's international strategy aimed at revenue growth and expenses optimization: the conference gives a unique opportunity to conduct talks with almost all foreign partners within several days».

Historically GTM conference was to determine the operators' forecast as for satellite channels usage during the coming years — for Intelsat to plan its satellite network development. However, as fiber-optic lines developed and global telecom traffic grew, the conference became the premier annual event providing an exceptional venue for all telecom operators to come together to conduct talks on every aspect of international cooperation.
