Norilsk Nickel MMC

March 26, 2004

Norilsk Nickel consideres ecology as a main priority issue

Today Norilsk sees the conference on the issues concerning the conservation of the environment in the Taimyr (Dolgano – Nenetski) Autonomous Region and the methods for solving them. Participating in the conference are representatives of the Council of the Federation and the State Duma of the Russian Federation (the upper and lower houses of the Russian parliament), the regional administrations of Taimyr and Norilsk, the Russian Federal Ministry of Natural Resources’ Authority for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection for Taimyr, The State Prophylactic and Epidemiological Commission for Norilsk, MMC Norilsk Nickel and various scientific and sociological organisations.

The main questions that will be addressed at the conference concern the current state of the environment in the Taimyr Autonomous Region and its monitoring and management, and the ecological aspects of the region’s largest industrial concern, MMC Norilsk Nickel’s Polar subsidiary. Those participating in the conference will determine the fundamental tasks involved in the preservation of Taimyr’s unique natural environment and will also discuss the ecological monitoring conducted in the Evenkiysk autonomous region. The conference will also play host to demonstrations of the most up to date environmental protection technology and a specialist book fair focussing on ecological literature.

In the course of the conference, MMC Norilsk Nickel will present their programme for the large-scale reconstruction of their smelting operations, which is concerned primarily with solving ecological problems. A project aimed at the modernisation of gas purification techniques and increasing the level of utilisation of sulphur from waste gases in order to reduce the level of harmful atmospheric emissions will also be presented. The conference will also discuss the permitted levels of atmospheric pollutant emissions for MMC Norilsk Nickel’s Polar subsidiary, which have been worked out by the Gipronickel Institute.

The company’s strategy for the development of production to 2015 (which was approved by MMC Norilsk Nickel’s Board of Directors in March 2003) foresees a step-by-step reduction in the effect its operations have on the environment. At the same time, a programme aimed at implementing an integrated system of quality control and ecological management, which will meet the demands of the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:1996 international standards, is being carried out at the company’s main administrative and production centres.

But MMC Norilsk Nickel is not only concerned with developing and improving its methods of dealing with the ecological problems posed by its industrial activities. The company is working in partnership with the Lapland nature reserve and the Putoran State National Park. The company also provides assistance to a non-commercial partnership, the Working Group on Waterfowl in Northern Eurasia, which is engaged in studying and conserving the lesser white-fronted goose, the smallest of all the arctic geese.
