Russian academy of science to conduct large scale sociological research in Norilsk on behalf of MMC Norilsk Nickel

| In a project initiated by MMC Norilsk Nickel, the Russian Academy of Science’s Institute of Socio-Political Research is to conduct a sociological research on an unprecedented scale in the Norilsk Industrial Region. In the course of the research, the institute’s working group will conduct a survey of 15,000 residents of towns in the Greater Norilsk area that will make it possible to examine the psychological condition of the respondents, as well as casting light on the general dynamics of the local community’s social attitudes and the needs of those living in the Norilsk Industrial Region (NIR).
The specially formulated questionnaire being proposed by the researchers will consist of 140 questions, the answers to which will help to show how the local population evaluate existing social and economic conditions in the town, the local authorities and MMC Norilsk Nickel, as well as their own ability to contribute to the local economy. The survey will be based on personal interviews with respondents, and participation will be voluntary and anonymous.
This project will be the first example of a comprehensive study of production and social conditions in a large-scale industrial region to be conducted in the post – Soviet era.
MMC Norilsk Nickel, whose enterprises lie at the very heart of the NIR’s existence, regards the research as a step up in its socially responsible activities, and believes that the project will make it possible to gain an insight into the future of social life in Norilsk, and to be able to bring about improvements by means of long term planning.
The Russian Academy of Science’s research will be the starting point for a whole series of socially significant undertakings, round-table meetings and seminars which will not only involve leading experts, industrialists and well – known politicians, but also ordinary people living in the area.
The research stage of the project will conclude with a large-scale social conference in the Norilsk Industrial Region.
