Incomparable Victory

Today «KAMAZ-Master» team was back home from Dakar after it has won a glorious victory at «Telefonica-Dakar 2004», which is one of the most prestigious annual international rally-raids of the world.

KAMAZ-Master» team from Naberezhnye Chelny is now 15 years old. Originally, it was arranged to represent a KamAZ Heavy-Duty Trucks Production Plant but gradually, in the course of time, it actually became a Russian national team. Within these years KAMAZ-Master has been the winner of various competitions held both internationally and in Russia. Not once the native city has welcomed its heroes. But this time the greeting at the city airport was a really extraordinary occasion.

Mintimer Shaimiev, the President of Tatarstan, congratulated the members of the team and managers of KAMAZ Inc. with this great victory. The winning crew consisting of Vladimir Tchaguine — pilot, Semion Yakoubov — navigator and the same time the head of KAMAZ-Master team, and Serguei Savostine — mechanic, became the leader of this marathon among trucks as soon as the caravan of more than 500 bikes, cars and trucks reached Africa and kept that position up to their finish in Dakar. Another KAMAZ crew consisting of pilot Firdaus Kabirov, navigator Aidar Belyaev and mechanic Dzhamil Kamalov has attacked their rivals on DAF, TATRA and other world famous brands of truck manufacturers. This crew did its best to hold the second position after Tchaguine’s crew till it reached the banks of the Rose Lake in Dakar. The third crew of Ilghizar Mardeev, Serguei Girya and Edward Kupriyanov was originally assigned to play the role of the assistant truck. Three well equipped KAMAZ trucks have proved themselves to be reliable vehicles, no dramatic failures of any of its parts took place while the rally and the trucks didn’t need any major maintenance while racing. This allowed the third KAMAZ truck to be the fourth at finish. It has left behind TATRA, MAN, Mercedes, HINO and other trucks of 34 crews (out of 38 at start) which reached the finish line of the rally. Assistant trucks’ crews consisting of Nickolai Strakhov, Nail Bagavetdinov, Serguei Nikitine and group of mechanics of Michail Myasoedov, Rafael Ilyasov, Andrei Zapolskih,Vladimir Golub have also won the overall ranking among technical aid trucks.

This time the rally heroes were welcomed not only by their relatives, KAMAZ top managers, Ildar Khalikov — the Head of the city administration, and mass media reporters, but also by their fans, who were also waiting for their idols in the airport, holding slogans: «TATRAs — second, TATARS — first!»

Semion Yakubov, the Head of KAMAZ-Master team said, that it has been the most difficult rally from those where the team participated within those 15 years. «We have been given all chances to win and we took advantage of them and won.»

Serguei Kogoghin, Director General of KAMAZ Inc., who arrived to Senegal earlier as a member of Tatarstan government delegation and was back to Russia the same flight with the team of winners, said: "We are very proud that the best trucks in the world and the best truck racers of the world are still born in Russia, in Tatarstan, in Naberezhnye Chelny — at «KAMAZ»!
