Severstal

January 8, 2004

Severstal signed a about 4 million USD contract for delivery of combined gas-cleaning facility for a new slab caster under construction in the Electric Arc Furnace Shop of Severstal

Reference:  The Project for creation of a new slab caster in the Electric Arc Furnace Shop of Severstal provides for construction of two new units - Shaft Electric Arc Furnace and Ladle Furnace, as well as revamping of the existing slab aster. Commissioning of all units of the process line with annual capacity of 800 thousand tons of slabs in January 2005 will enable Severstal to increase production of electric steel up to 2 million tons per year. Furthermore, the start-up of this line will complete the transition of the  steel company to continuous casting route with increased volume of continuously cast billet and will help to retain heavy plate and electric steel slabs customers.

The Canadian company Quad Engineering will supply the equipment for combined gas cleaning facility which will work concurrently with two units - shaft furnace and ladle furnace. This company successfully advances its know-how in gas cleaning equipment engineering in the markets of North America, Japan and Korea. Quad Engineering was the winner of the tender against other participants - Lurgi (Germany) and Kondor Eco (Russia).
The choice in favor of Quad Engineering was based primarily on the company guarantees of the ecological efficiency of the offered technology and gas cleaning equipment. The supplier guarantees in particular that regardless of temperature the amount of emissions will meet all applicable norms of maximum permissible concentration.

Furthermore, the Canadian company's offer completely agreed with the Severstal specifications: the gas cleaning facility has to be constructed in the existing production conditions, using the existing power and utilities network and infrastructure.

Quad Engineering will deliver their equipment during 2004, and construction work for the facility will start in January, 2004.
