Vniigaz’s Academic Council meeting

An Academic Council meeting of the Research Institute of Natural Gases and Gas Technologies (VNIIGAZ) on the topic “Russia’s gas production resource base” was held on October 7, 2004.

Alexander Ananenkov, Gazprom’s Management Committee Deputy Chairman, Rudolf Ter-Sarkisov, Director General of VNIIGAZ and the Chairman of the Council Meeting, specialists of Gazprom’s administration and Gazprom’s subsidiaries as well as scientists and experts of VNIIGAZ and other research institutions of the gas industry took part in the meeting.

Mr. Ananenkov in his speech stressed that the replenishment of the resource base is one of the most important tasks for Gazprom, which is in line with the Company’s aspiration to boost natural gas production up to 580-590 bcm in 2020 and 610-630 bcm in 2030. Gazprom’s Management Committee Deputy Chairman pointed out, that, given the decrease in the Senomanian cost-effective gas reserves at the unique fields in the Nadym-Pur-Taz region, a science-based geological & economic assessment and classification of gas resources in accordance with the international standards should be a top priority task in researches on increasing the exploration efficiency.

The participants of the meeting discussed the current state and the outlook of the gas industry mineral base development, science-based approaches to the mineral base replenishment and the issues regarding the methodology for geological & economic monitoring of gas resources.

The decision adopted based on the Academic Council meeting results stressed the necessity of increasing the scientific support to the gas production base development; overcoming the gap between natural gas production and the additions to the resource base (taking into account deterioration of the quality of residual and added gas reserves) and enhancing gas production; geological & economic monitoring of Gazprom-controlled or still undistributed hydrocarbon resources in order to increase the probability of qualitative and economic assessments of Russia’s gas resources and reserves. The initiatives to be implemented fist aim to develop the efficient system of resource base management, providing Gazprom’s capitalization build-up.

Reference:

The Gazprom Group’s share in the global and Russia’s gas reserves accounts for 16% and about 60%, respectively. Gazprom’s explored gas reserves are estimated at 28 tcm.

VNIIGAZ is a key research, technological and engineering center of Gazprom, responsible for the gas industry mineral base development; gas and gas condensate production, transmission, complex treatment; environmental and operational safety of the gas industry facilities.
