JSC Severstal affirmed the compliance of its ecological management system to ISO 14001 International Standard

ISO 14001 Certificate was handed over by Mr David Fardel, BVR (Bureau Veritas Rus) Executive General Manager (the audit had been carried out by BVQI certification authority). Members of the city and region administration and heads of Russian Federation controlling and supervision bodies as well as Vologda region leading enterprises top managers were present at the ceremony.

Having congratulated Severstal on successful obtaining of re-certification, Mr Fardel underlined that certificate acquisition is not the final goal for an iron and steel company, it is a constant day-to-day work. "Today, the environment management system is performing and progressing successfully at Severstal", David Fardel pointed out.
At the press conference held after the certificate confirmation ceremony, JSC Severstal Technical Director A.A. Stepanov informed mass media about the Harmful Emission Reduction Program accepted by the iron and steel works for the period up to 2015. It is planned to spend more than 2.5 billion rubles for its accomplishment. By 2010 this program will result in Severstal annual total emission reduction by 12 %.

Among major program measures the Technical Director of the company pointed out Sinter Plant exhaust system modernization which will allow the reduction of dust emission volumes by 2.1; the building of cast house exhaust systems at blast furnaces ?? 1, 2, 4 in the BF Shop will allow further reduction of this ingredient emission by 1.5, and the building of fugitive emission recovery plant at cast iron pouring into BOF converters will allow to reduce dust emissions by almost 18 times as compared to the present volumes. Moreover, converter waste gas utilization in BOF will allow to reduce carbon oxide emissions into atmosphere by 3.4, and reheating furnaces ?? 1-4  modernization in  HRS-2 will allow to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 2.1.

The modernization of gas cleaning in the central ferroalloy storage area, scheduled for 2005, will enable us to reduce ferroalloy dust emissions by 3.4.

Another step within the framework of the program will be the establishment of JSC Severstal sanitary protection zone. Landscape improvement and planting of trees and gardens will be done at the territory adjacent to Severstal and at several quarters of the city; the cost will amount to 40 million rubles.
