Meeting of Gas Industry Commission for Fields Development and Natural Resources Exploitation held

The city of Novgorod hosted a scheduled meeting of the Gas Industry Commission for Fields Development and Natural Resources Exploitation, chaired by Sergey Khan, Head of Gazprom’s Underground Gas Storage Division.

The meeting was attended by experts from core business divisions of Gazprom, VNIIGAZ, VNIPIgazdobycha, Mostransgaz, Lentransgaz, Volgotransgaz, Yugtransgaz and other Gazprom’s subsidiaries.

The Commission reviewed the fulfillment of measures aimed at Gazprom’s preparing Russia’s underground gas storage (UGS) facilities for the 2004-2005 autumn-winter heating season.

The meeting underscored that all the Gazprom’s UGS facilities would be fully ready for the 2004-2005 autumn-winter period.

By 15 October, Russian UGS facilities will have 62.5 bcm of commercial gas reserves. The reserves to be stock-piled will make it possible to secure domestic and export natural gas supplies in the upcoming 2004-2005 autumn-winter heating season.

Reference:

Gazprom is currently operating 24 UGS facilities in Russia, including the Ryazan region-situated Kasimov UGS facility (the world’s largest UGS facility constructed in an aquifer) and the North-Stavropol UGS facility (the world’s largest UGS facility built on a depleted gas field).

In addition, Gazprom has shareholdings in a handful of foreign businesses operating UGS facilities in Latvia, Armenia and Germany and stores gas on a contract basis in Ukrainian UGS facilties.

At present, Gazprom is being involved in the construction of 3 UGS facilities in Russia, including the Udmurt Reservation Complex, Kaliningrad and Volgograd UGS facilities. A range of UGS facilities are currently being surveyed and engineered.

In accordance with various inter-governmental agreements, Gazprom is studying geologic and technical possibilities of constructing UGS facilities in Romania.

For the time being, the maximum daily capacity of Russian UGS facilities is estimated at 550 mln cu m, with 1.15 bcm of active capacity to be brought into operation until year-end 2004. This will ensure a 16 mln cu m capacity build-up between December 2004 and February 2005.
