MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

September 20, 2004

MOSENERGO’s CHP-23 became less noisy

Mosenergo has installed a noise-absorbing screen around a cooling tower of CHP-23. The engineers have implemented a number of unique solutions that allowed the company to considerably reduce noise impact on nearby buildings.

CHP-23 is located in a residential area of the Eastern Administrative District. This electric station is one of the most powerful in Moscow (1,410 MWt of installed capacity). Residential buildings at Khimushina Street are located less than 150 m from its industrial facilities. Therefore, Mosenergo pays close attention to environmental parameters of CHP-23 operations. A most important focus is on the reduction of the noise impact on residential areas. «The power station is very powerful and located inside the city,» director of CHP-23 Nikolai Zroichikov said. «Therefore, the noise reduction problem is more than important for us.»

The Research Institute for Construction Physics has carried out an acoustic survey of CHP-23 premises and discovered the source of highest noise was the cooling tower. The company decided to install a noise absorbing screen at the unit to prevent noise waves from spreading around the tower.

Specialists from the Moscow Energy Institute (Technical University) calculated the acoustic efficiency of the screen and found that the noise level at a 3 m distance from the tower is reduced to 29 db. It means that the effect is so high, that one cannot hear any noise even in close proximity to the unit. As a result, noise impact turned out to be lower than existing sanitary norms.

Another advantage of this project was its low cost. The initial expenditures in the screen installation exceeded 3.5 m rubles. However, after changes in the design and implementation of unique solutions the price went down to 500,000 rubles.
