In order to prepare the equipment for the peak loads in the winter, Mosenergo is carrying out maintenance and reconstruction of cable lines and electric equipment. In 2004, the volume of maintenance on some types of equipment has several times exceeded the planned indicators.

In particular, the Moscow Cable Grid (MCC), a subsidiary of Mosenergo, has carried out maintenance on more than 6,000 0.4-10 kV cable lines and replaced almost 110 km of cable lines. The company nearly completed the winter preparation for 110-550 kV high-voltage cable lines.

In the upgrade of cable lines Mosenergo uses the equipment of ABB and Nexans. MCC replaces obsolete oil-filled lines with polyethylene-insulated cables that have longer lives and meet modern environmental standards. In addition, the upgrade makes it possible to increase the capacity of cable lines which improves the reliability of power supply for consumers.

MCC also carried out the maintenance on 646 subtransformer stations and replaced all equipment at 22 subtransformers. This year, MCC exceeded the maintenance plan by 3.5 times. The main reason for replacing transformers is high annual electricity consumption growth in Moscow (5%). Old transformers could work after the certification for another 25 years, but they don’t have sufficient capacity to meet the growing electricity requirements of Muscovites. To this end, Mosenergo is replacing old transformers that were produced in 1960-70’s by newer ones, more powerful and reliable.

In total, Mosenergo operates in Moscow 55,000 km of 1-10 kV cables and more than 15,000 6-10 kV transformer stations and distribution units.
