MMK

September 8, 2004

On September 8, 2004 Rudolf Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, now Chairman and CEO of Giuliani Partners LLC, paid a visit to the Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK), Russia

As reported earlier, Mr. Giuliani brought to Magnitogorsk a group of representatives of investment companies. The agenda included a meeting with the management of MMK, a presentation of the company and a tour of MMK and the city of Magnitogorsk. At the end of the day a press conference was held.

Rudolf Giuliani started with the words of sympathy for all people of Russia dedicated to the horrible tragedy in Beslan. As he said, the Americans who have lived through September 11, 2001, feel and share the pain of Russia. He pointed out that such things have no explanation and it is very hard to find consolation in such grief . Mr. Giuliani appealed to all people of America and Russia to stand together in the face of terror.

The former mayor expressed his gratitude to the people of Magnitogorsk for the warm and friendly welcome and shared his impressions of the visit. The tour of the steel works, he said, was really a wonderful experience. Mr. Giuliani said it looked like not a single plant, but a lot of enterprises all located in an enormous area. He did not expect that steelmaking and processing facilities would be of such great size. The products made in MMK could satisfy the needs of several countries, said Mr. Giuliani. The guest was also impressed by the company’s dynamic development, its prospects and performance.

Victor Rashnikov, General Director of MMK, took part in the conference and underlined his appreciation of the visit. The company enjoys a high ranking among the leading international enterprises. But, as MMK's CEO pointed out, MMK’s achievements and development show that it is not the time to repose on laurels. The company intends to go to a higher level.

MMK’s policy provides for maximum transparency of the company’s activities. MMK was one of the first to use the services of international rating agencies and today has ratings assigned by the three leading agencies. The high international ratings of MMK stem from the stable financial and economical status of the company and transparency of its accounting in accordance with the international standards. For many years the company has been keeping its accounts under international standards, and international auditing firms review these accounts on a regular basis. MMK has gained the reputation of a reliable partner and borrower among Russian and international investors. But the company is willing to move onwards, said Mr. Rashnikov.

One of the company’s strategic goals is to access the American stock market. This meeting with the major US investors is one of the steps on the way.

When asked about the purpose of the visit to Magnitogorsk, Rudolf Giuliani responded that it was dedicated to establishing contacts between Russian and American businesses.
