A working meeting between Alexey Miller, Gazprom’s Management Committee Chairman and Mario Silberman, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Chile in Russia, was held today at Gazprom’s Headquarters.

The meeting addressed issues of potential cooperation in the gas business. In particular, M. Silberman reported on Chile’s plans to build a liquefied natural gas reception terminal in Chile.

Chile is one of the most economically successful countries in Latin America. Chile is the world’s leader in copper production and exports, with domestic wood processing, agriculture and fishing highly developed, as well.

Chile extracts insignificant amount of natural gas that is, largely, imported from Argentina (some 5 bcm per annum). Liquefied natural gas is not delivered to the country. Major gas and electricity consumers in Chile are the power generation and copper and ore mining sectors (35% of the overall amount), respectively.

In 2003, Chile’s gross domestic product and inflation grew 3.2% (in 2002, 1.8%) and 2.8%, respectively.
