MMC Norilsk Nickel to become member of Palladium Council, Nickel Institute and Cobalt Development Institute

MMC Norilsk Nickel’s Annual General Meeting of shareholders, which took place in Moscow on June 24, 2004, adopted a resolution proposing that the company takes part in three international non-commercial organisations – the Palladium Council, the Nickel Institute and the Cobalt Development Institute.

FUTHER INFORMATION

The Palladium Council is an international non-commercial research organisation with its headquarters in the USA. It was founded in 2004. The organisation’s purpose is to carry out research and to co-ordinate the efforts of producers and processors of palladium with the aim of widening the use of this metal. Both producers of palladium and its consumers in the automobile, electronic, oil-processing, jewellery, and dental industries, as well as in other areas of industry, are invited to take an active role in the council. Also involved are scientific research organisations, universities, laboratories, among others, as well as private individuals who have an interest in increasing the demand for palladium.

The international industrial organisation the Nickel Institute was registered in 2004. The Institute serves as a forum for nickel producers with regard to environmental and safety concerns in the production and use of the metal, and is also actively engaged in supporting the development of new areas for its use. The Institute, which counts among its members more than 70 per cent of the world’s nickel producers, intends to pool the knowledge that has been accumulated over time by these producers in the area of safety and good practice in the production, use, and recycling of nickel.

The international non-commercial organisation the Cobalt Development Institute was founded in 1982, and is based in London. At present, the Institute has 60 members from 18 countries, including all the major producers and a many of the large-scale consumers of cobalt. The Institute conducts scientific research connected with the development of new methods of producing cobalt and new ways of utilising it.
