Russian Academy of Sciences and MMC Norilsk Nickel to set up “Norilsk Palladium” Scientific Centre

MMC Norilsk Nickel and the Russian Academy of Sciences have signed an agreement to develop a joint research programme aimed at the creation and industrial exploitation of market viable technologies and materials utilising palladium in both hi-tech and science-intensive production.  With this end in mind, the Russian Academy of Sciences is to set up the Norilsk Palladium Scientific Centre at its Unified Catalysing Institute, which is located at the Academy’s facilities in Siberia.

The agreement is part of the process set in motion by the general agreement on cooperation in the area of hydrogen energy and fuel cells that was signed on behalf of the Russian Academy of Sciences and MMC Norilsk Nickel by the President of the Academy, academician Yuri Osipov, and MMC Norilsk Nickel’s  General Director - Management Board Chairman Mikhail Prokhorov, in November 2003.

MMC Norilsk Nickel is the world’s largest producer and exporter of palladium.  Palladium is used in catalysing processes, and particularly in the production of catalytic converters for motor vehicles, as well as in medicine and the jewellery industry.
