ALROSA enters the Top-5 of sustainability rating «Polar Index»

Moscow, June 7, 2018 - ALROSA, the world’s largest diamond mining company, has entered Top 5 of pilot sustainability rating “Polar Index” among Russian companies operating in Arctic. The rating is developed by Project Office of Arctic Development and the environmental economics department of Faculty of Economics of the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

"Polar Index" became the first specialized rating of companies whose geography of activities affects the Arctic zone of Russia. The results of the first rating were presented in the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation on World Environment Day held on June 5.

The methodology for calculating the rating is based on the theory of sustainable development, established under the guidance of the United Nations as a universal model of development – from individual territories and enterprises to the world as a whole. Sustainable development is understood as a balance of its economic, environmental and social components.

At the first stage of calculating the rating by a special method, the sustainable development index of companies is calculated. It takes into consideration a number of parameters, divided into three groups: economic, social and environmental. At the second stage, an expert survey is carried out in the form of a questionnaire. Experts put scores on a ten-point scale to all participating companies in three blocks of questions – economic, social and environmental. The questionnaire takes into account the territorial specifics as much as possible; the questions are devoted to the work of companies precisely in arctic conditions.

The detailed information about Project Office of Arctic Development and the rating is available on the website  of the organization.
